It’s a common occurrence: an act has a great song on their hands, and yet it simply fails to ignite. A simple home-recorded video of Mary in what appears to be a hooded animal onesie showcased a beautiful tune and a beguiling voice was posted on YouTube in 2020 where it subsequently got buried in all the noise.
She’s since rerecorded the song with longtime collaborator Milan Reid at his home studio, with a much fuller arrangement with bass, percussion, and synths. It’s certainly more polished and full-realised sounding, yet retains the dreamy charm of that sparse original.
A song about ‘both feelings of holding back and not caring about what other people think,’ the new arrangement highlights those swings back and forth, and ultimately breaks free of doubt into a sunny vista of optimism.
