Our Rating:
The Pick Your King E.P. was Poison Idea's debut album originally released in 1983 this is the 40th anniversary re-issue on White vinyl 12" single with new liner notes from Jerry A. Lang the bands singer, who played alongside Tom Roberts, Dean Johnson and Chris Tense when this was recorded in Portland Oregon on 20th January 1983.

The band at the time were just about old enough to join up to die on behalf of The US Government but not older enough to drink legally. They were punks in the hippy city of Portland and angry as hell as the 13 songs they blast through in 13 minutes make clear.

The Jesus side opens with Think Twice a super speedy song, with an eruption of guitars, as they state they don't carry guns and will hold there own without need for a gun, a message that is still at the heart of the American disease.

Its An Action sounds like a call to arms suggested in the title, simple speedy riffs railing against the system and the police oppression same as it sadly still is 40 years later.

This Thing Called Progress shouldn't still sound spot on, but of course it does. Still an angry righteous blast still fighting against the 1%.

In My Headache is low slung amphetamine hardcore headache music. Underage is so super speedy like they are having an premature ejaculation in your ears as they want to be old enough to drink and smoke.

Self Abuse should come with its own lube, even if this is throw yourself at the wall to vent your spleen angry, but abuse yourself rather than abusing and hurting others, if you can't shoot yourself don't shoot anyone else.

The Elvis side opens with Cult Band it takes a dig at cult bands who keep putting out more product, like this re-issue in fact, not sure they thought they would still be flogging this record 40 years later, ah the follies of youth before they became the sort of Cult band they are signing about, as this rips along like they want to be Motorhead but at twice the pace.

Last One should close the record but burns with incandescent rage as hard as it possibly can. Pure Hate is as full of hatred for anyone dumb enough to want to fit in as it can possibly be.

Castration is the penalty they want for all sorts of sexual abusers who need to have this blasting 24 hours a day at top volume in their prison cells too.

Reggae (I Hate) uses a reggae bassline as they scream about how much they hate reggae, like juvenile idiots, as they don't see anything in reggaes message for them. I hope the years have softened them to Reggae's allure.

Give it Up has Motorhead on the brain, as the flying fury blows the speakers apart. The album closes with Think Fast, it is of course as fast as anything else on this super speedy 13-minute-long hardcore punk masterpiece that's loaded with bile and fury.
