Our Rating:
Modern Cosmology are a Brazilian and French band that is a collaboration between Laetitia Sadier and the members of the Brazilian band Mombojo whose Felipe S. first contacted Laetitia when he was asked if he could lend her some equipment, for some Brazilian shows she was playing. He brought along his brother Vicente and the bands keyboardist Chiquinho and they got along well enough to start to work on a project together, with the help of Mombojo's other member Missionairio Jose, this initial collaboration came out as the Sumer Long EP in 2016.

As part of my preparation for writing this review I've also been listening to another of Laetitia's groups the short lived SOOP as a live recording of one of the bands only live shows was recently unearthed and digitized for the first time but is very hard to acquire. That shows that she has been playing music in a similar vein for a very long time now alongside her work with Stereolab. I also listened to some Modern Brazilian pop music while in one of my local Brazilian restaurants, thankfully Mombojo sound like they have lots more going for them and more personality that the music I heard.

The album opens with Making Something a laid-back genteel song encouraging everyone to get creative and Make Something, enjoying the process and the satisfaction at seeing what you're capable of, the cautious careful guitar and percussion accentuate Laetitia's careworn precise vocals.

Le Train Ne Passera Pas has a very chanson electronique feel to it, a gauzy sense of ennui as you sit watching the trains roll by, as you start to feel gently intoxicated by the organ's slow persistence.

Consent For Life is a plea to be allowed to live our lives as fully as possible, while avoiding the pain and sorrows that life might throw your way. The percussion gets odd in a tricky kind of way as the strings build seeking the consent to be able to really trust those around you, as the keyboard does all sorts of things.

What Will You Grow Now? Has a dappled feel, ululating keyboards gently imploring you to nurture and grow, make sure your able to feed those around you, as this feels super laid back.

Trauma Release Makes Free is a snare drum led song that delves into the world of Gender studies and how this frames perception of how we are treated, through lives difficulties caused by toxic behavior of certain men, this slowly seeps in, as the message within hopefully helps to free your mind, while bringing a sense of self determination to your modern reality.

The album closes with a Time To Blossom one final laid back sun kissed song, encouraging us to look after the world around us, to help to make sure all the plants are given the time and conditions in which to bloom, as Laetitia asks a few deeply pertinent questions the half speed Bossa Nova beat draws you in.
