Review: 'REEL, BEN'
'Come A Long Way'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Alt/Country' -  Release Date: '30th June 2023'

Our Rating:
The 11th album from this roots rocker features eleven brand new originals recorded & produced in the artist’s home studio in South Armagh, Ireland.

Reel has a backing band but he hardly needs one since he sings and plays guitars (acoustic and electric), harmonica, piano, organ, synths and percussion,

The tunes are described as ”songs of reflection, hope and searching for redemption” which were mostly written during the pandemic.

What I hear are soporific songs which lean too heavily away from his Irish roots towards bland Blue Collar Americana in which he merely apes Springsteen and Roy Orbison.

Reel may be pleased with himself for coming a long way in life but admits in the title track “I still don’t know where I’m going. “.

He calls for help from Jesus and in the final track unconvincingly claims I Shall Be Redeemed. Good luck with that.
