Review: 'Menace, Anabollic Steroids, The Anoraks, Plague UK'
'Live at The Dublin Castle Camden'

-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: '19.8.23.'

Our Rating:
Somehow this gig represents bands no 53 to 56 that I've seen so far this August, as well as the first of the bands I saw at Rebellion to be seen since coming back home.

Plague UK were already on by the time we got into a reasonably packed Dublin Castle, they are a South London 3-piece angry punk band, who let us know on the second song we heard that We're gonna Destroy just about anything and everything they can, that needs a good kicking and re-arranging. The choppy guitars helped to tell some Stories as they showed not all the songs were bitter, as they told us what they thought of Mr Nice. They closed by mocking everyone as they told us All Your Lives Are Full Of Shit, surely not, we at least know how to have a good time at gigs like this.

Next on were The Anoraks, one of those bands who've been around since the mid-90's, are always worth a gander every once in a while, as they feature 4 perpetual faces on the London gig scene. They get in the party mood straight away on Wasted, like they've all done a speed bomb or two, they then re-work New Rose into a dark spiky jolt of a tune. Stayin In is about the odd night when they are not prowling around town. They reserved the bands angriest song for Mother In Law, full of spite and hate for she who wants to be obeyed.

They all shared the vocals and I think it was the drummer who sang Alright Then in her raspy way, while pummeling out another solid tune. Anorak Dub took them from deep dub through to hardcore punk dub in the space of about two and a half minutes. Lost Community showed the issues side of the band and had some great spunky guitars. Kings Road took me back to the 80's watching the cider punks begging for booze money, while going to the great gear market in my lunchtimes, but they were obviously celebrating other Kings Road legends.

They then took aim at the Plastic Punks, we know who they mean, before finishing there ram raid with Punks 4 Evah or whatever any of the songs are really called, they were great fun like normal.
Next it was time to see the Anabolic Steroids again, not that I can remember when or where I last saw them, but we both recognized them.

The bands motto is "Ability Stinks and so do we" they are 11 years into their comeback to obscurity, having first been around between 78 to 83. They are a 4 piece and the newest member the drummer was on his 4th gig, they played splenetic shambolic Hardcore punk, as they sang Act Normal it was clear this lot don't know how to do that. The guitars wailed and wallowed all over the place on Zombie Love, while the singer spat at us that he wanted to Kill The Bastard as he shook almost doing the insane robot dance, as they went into the bands anthemic Fuck Work to get us all angry at our bosses once more.

Hearing a good loose messy punk band sing about Potential is always fun as was 2.2 & A Mortgage that mocked anyone who is happy with a boring normal life, isn't part of a scene, or out doing more than paying the bills. Yeah they had a Nervous Breakdown all right, they were worried they stayed in time for a whole song. No False flags was a raggedly brilliant anti-war song.

There were no illusions about the First Time as they Tell That Man To Fuck Off that got everyone chanting along to the chorus. The final two songs carried on in the bands shambolic fashion to leave some of us smiling as they tried to flog everyone a t-shirt.

Menace was soon enough ready to tell us The Truth once more super speedy with Noel doing his best to get all Screwed Up as they frantically went on about the Monkey On Your Back. Did they really want us to Leave me Alone, well no, as we all wanted to find out about Last Night. They made sure anyone who saw them at Rebellion got a surprise as they dropped Electrocutioner into the set to please the long time fans.

I Need Nothing saw Noel playing guitar, while the bass maestro (is it Rob?) also took lead vocals. Apparently Noel claims he's living on Rocks & Dust, as they fly through I'm Civilized. Everyone sang along to Fuck You. They had the normal stage invasion for GLC before as normal following it with Last Years Youth a song that happily didn't apply to all the audience.

Noel then found someone wearing a man At C & A t-shirt so he could sing the lyrics that are on the back of the shirt. They played another song they hardly play, sadly my notes have lost the plot, so not sure what it was, they then closed the night with a good speedy run through One Two One Two to leave us wondering if we need to see them back at the Dublin Castle next month for the Rock & Roll Book Club.
