Review: 'FRODE HALTLI'
'Avant Folk Triptyk'

-  Label: 'Jazzland Recordings'
-  Genre: 'Ambient' -  Release Date: '22nd September 2023'

Our Rating:
Accordionist Frode Haltli founded Avant Folk in 2017. He leads a cast of notable Norwegian musicians spanning all ages and generations to produce a curious sound that manages to blend contemporary jazz and progressive rock with traditional folk music. Other instruments include guitars, violins, saxophone, Hammond organ, drums and bass.

This release follows two previous albums on the esteemed Hubro label. It opens with the first single, Trippar, a title that suggests a chemically induced mind trip but actually takes its name from a regional dance tune in south Norway.

Prillar is the longest track (12:32) and explemplifies the constantly shifting focus and mood of the album as a whole.

The instrumental music has a playful quality which transcends its oddness and creates an atmosphere that is eerie yet strangely alluring.

File under adventurous ambient.
