Grey DeLisle was born and raised in San Diego and is of Mexican-Irish descent. Her last album was a covers record but she wrote or co-wrote all 14 songs here with the exception of a version of Billy Vera’s I Really Got The Feeling which was originally written for Dolly Parton.
The album was produced by Deke Dickerson and Eddie Clendening, who both play on the album, Musicians include DJ Bonebrake (formerly of Lone Justice) on vibes, Bernie Dresel on drums and T. Jarrod Bonta on piano.
A feisty approach to traditional country is signalled by the opening song :I’ll Go Back To Denver (And You Can Go To Hell). In this she bemoans not taking advice about men from her mamma.
DeLisle’s drawl is pure Nashville, at once both sassy and vulnerable. In another song she sings of looking for someone to help her to get Wasted which sounds to me like another case of ignoring parental guidance.
The love songs are best described as bitter sweet but DeLisle does not play the victim card. Her pragmatic attitude is exemplified by I Missed You (”but my aim is improving”) and Who Bought The Boots Beside Your Bed (”our love is hanging by a thread”).

The tracks are all snappily delivered in three minutes or less apart from the four minute title tune.
There’s a nice short but sweet swing to I Like The Way You Think I Think, co-written with Robert Williams, and a humorous duet with of Asleep at the Wheel’s Ray Benson on The Dog.
These contribute to the playful quality of this good-natured and big-hearted collection.
