Review: 'SESSION AMERICANA'
'The Rattle and The Clatter'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Alt/Country' -  Release Date: '2nd February 2024'

Our Rating:
Session Americana first jammed together around a table in the back of a bar in Cambridge, Massachusetts in October 2003.The band’s fondness for hard drinking and music making has continued uninterrupted ever since.

The lyrics to Beer Town highlight one way their career has been fuelled: ”Gonna drink ‘til it hurts my liver / Gonna drink in a puddle of foam”

After nine records so far the loose collective are in the mood to celebrate their two-decade journey with this sixteen-track retrospective album and a series of tour dates in their favourite venues.

The record features guest contributions from the likes of Anäs Mitchell, Kris Delmhorst, Laura Cortese, Jefferson Hamer and Dietrich Strause, The highlights are in the form of romantic ballads like Trip Around The Sun and Air Running Backwards with female lead vocals

The other genres covered range from good-time rockabilly to rowdy hoedowns and they dip freely into folk, country, swing and bluesy jazz.

Two tracks - Making Hay and I Ain’t Living Long Like This - were recorded at the Haybarn Theatre and give the impression that the majority of these songs would be best heard in a live setting.

All in all it’s a genial mix that doesn’t break any new ground but treads many familiar musical pathways with warmth and good humour.
