Review: 'BEDSIT POETS'
'All Roads Lead Me Back'

-  Label: 'Self Released'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: 'March 2024'

Our Rating:
The English duo Edward Rogers (vocals, percussion) and Amanda Thorpe (vocals, guitar, keyboards) were named and encouraged by their friend Colin Blunstone of Zombies fame.

The couple have both lived in New York though not always at the same time. This, their third album, was recorded in that city with their long-time producer Don Piper.

Despite the stateside connection, there’s little trace of an American influence. The twelve self-written songs have more of a wistful English feel. The title comes from the chorus to London Town suggesting that the Smoke rather than the Big Apple remains their primary point of reference.

Guest musicians flesh out the gentle melodies of the lounge tinged psychedelia with James Mastro on guitar making the most striking contribution. The Dark Night is the most rock orientated track and includes the advice :“don’t be afraid to scream out loud.”

The lyrics hint at self-doubt and alienation yet lack any poetic resonance. Nothing sounds obviously awkward or out of place but, equally, nothing really sticks in the memory. Ironically the last line of the last tune December My Dear seems to confirm this : “It’s too easy to forget.”
