Our Rating:
Ruth Moody is still a member of The Wailin’ Jennys but, as her two previous solo albums have proven, her stand-alone voice is as every bit as powerful as it is in the trio she co- founded.

Moody took time off to start a family in 2016 and this collection of original tunes serves as a chronicle of the changes in her life over the past decade. It was recorded at Sound Emporium in Nashville and co-produced by Moody and Dan Knobler.

The sultry charm and quiet grace is exemplified in The Way Lovers Move and there’s an understated emotional depth that shines through in other songs.

She sings of nostalgia for a burgeoning love of ‘Seventeen, while paying homage to her hometown of Winnipeg, and duets elegantly with fellow Canadian Joey Landreth on The Spell of the Lilac Bloom

The title track explores what belonging means as she sings of feeling torn between the instinct to maintain a wanderer’s life and the desire to set down roots. The final chorus: “Love is Calling You Home” indicates which direction she has chosen.

There’s nothing showy or revelatory about any of the ten songs but the blend of calmness, honesty and purity is a winning combination.
