Review: 'WESTWOOD, JENNIFER & THE HANDSOME DEVILS'
'Mad Man's World'

-  Label: 'Maverick Ranch'
-  Genre: 'Alt/Country' -  Release Date: '17th June 2024'

Our Rating:
Jennifer Westwood and her Handsome Devils define themselves as “a genre blending band with rustbelt sensibilities.”

The band is led by guitarist Dylan Dunbar and features prominent Stax style horn backing from Joshua James and Jimmy Smith.

There is a dive-bar swagger to Westwood’s vocals; the defiant voice of a woman in a man’s world.

The sound is efficient but unimaginative.

The lyrical content functions like a series of self-affirming slogans without seeming to be emotionally engaged.

When she sings “I wanna feel alive” in Bits & Pieces it is like a statement of fact rather than a heartfelt plea.

This is raunchy soul music minus the soul.
