Our Rating:
I’m pretty tired of artists who claim to defy genres. It is never true and usually only defines those who are unsure of what direction they are going in.
Jordie Lane can be safely labelled as folk although , since the album was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, you might want to add country into the mix.
He is an Aussie by birth which muddies the waters a little but, despite claims to the contrary, his music is far from genre-less. I’d place him somewhere between Gram Parsons and Roy Harper; not a bad place to be by any means.
Apparently many of the twelve songs offer ”brooding social commentary in a post pandemic new-world but if there’s a political message it’s fairly well disguised. Biscuit House comes with a frankly incomprehensible and profoundly unfunny video.
The sentiments of It Might Take Our Whole Lives are infinitely clearly and less mannered; “I don’t wanna be lonely, I don’t wanna die young” are lines most listeners can easily relate to.
Lane has an ear for a good tune and a soothing voice so, while never trail blazing or truly memorable, this album is an easy listen with a pleasantly understated quality.
