Our Rating:
Mingling With The Thorns is the second album by Vancouver based Riot Twee band Wut who are a trio of Lauren Smith, Tracey Vath and Kaity McWhinney who wrote and recorded most of the album during the pandemic lockdowns remotely.

What Wut What the album opens with Powering Through in our anoraks hoping to get to the wall we like to lean against, floppy fringes covering our eyes allowing those guitars to jangle just so, they wipe the tears away, no bullies allowed, but really for me and you we are really only Powering Through this scene, namechecking the PR company in the opening song always helps of course.

Here For You of course Wut are Here For You and they will help hustle you out the door and on to more pure pursuits, in ways cool as can be indie girls can, she'll even forget the name of that bloke you saw her with, while naming three Sea Urchins b-sides if that's what it takes.

Quiet Quiet some bloke needs to mansplain how to make cool fey indie tunes like this one, make sure you sound as basic as possible, your vocals are a cross between Moe Tucker, Amelia Fletcher and Tracey Thorn, now listen to what he tells you and you'll have everything you want.

Mingling With The Thorns is for all those women that men never describe as Roses, the thorns, the pains, the women they don't lust after for no good reason, Wut are actually ecstatically happy you haven't bombarded them with your alleged charms, leaving them to flourish without you.

Get Out go on leave them well alone, whatever you do don't get handsy without express permission to do so, or they will publicly shame you with the sweetest vocals they can, while sounding a bit like Salad but sans the keyboards.

Guts/Brains wonders why it's so hard for you to tell the truth if you have nothing to hide, like they are asking dumb politicians to actually listen to normal folks, before spouting more self-serving rubbish, over the gentle indie pop. You don't need to know your stuff we will believe anything you say right, what else do you need apart from Guts/Brains the complete formula for success.

Your Feelings are everything to Wut, they just want to hear you express them in cogent ways, that allow them to wallow in the mire with you, the guitar solo tries to get you to spill the beans.

Alleys With You yes, they will be Alleys With You or even hang out in them if you promise to be good and do Wut your told, this gets more dramatic towards the end.

Beuys Oh Beuys why can't you be more like Joseph and make sculptures of giant shit to put on the floor of the Tate gallery or is it about some of his better artworks.

Talking To Strangers is dangerous enough when you do it online, but in real life well take care, but what ever you do say what you want, just be careful the monsters are out there, this is a gentle reminder to take precautions when needed.

The album closes with When I'm Gone make sure not to be too sad, you'll be ok, they kiss you goodbye one last time, before swanning off into the Canadian wilderness, leaving you with all those fond memories, allowing you to shack up with the other woman you’ve always lusted after.
