When Sexy Tooth Situation the second album by Harry Cloud arrived it was packaged to look like a Christmas present, arriving far too early, which made Andrew Sedberry's artwork revealed on opening the package all the more shocking, although not as gobsmacking as the artwork for his last album The Cyst, this is still quite something visually and the painting on the inside of the gatefold sleeve even more so. for fans of outsider art this record is worth getting for the artwork alone.
The album was mainly improvised in the studio by Harry and his able assistant and producer Paul Roessler, with a little extra drumming from Joe Berardi at Kitten Robot studios and mastered by Maori Applebaum. The album has also been turned into a Stop Motion Ai Animation film called Slug Opera by Tawn B Dorenfeld that I watched after writing the review, it is very intense.
The A-side opens with Anthrax that sounds nothing like either band of that name, But does sound pretty poisonous folk strumming with odd cadences just enough to worry you as to where this is headed.
Black Is The Day has slow expiring guitar chords, with far away vocals weaving between the drums, that come and go as Harry slowly narrates just how black things have become, with ankle shaking bass helping you to crawl from the miasma, you dream of seeing another perfect pre-molar.
Journey To The Center Of The Spirit has a slow drum pattern that psychedelic guitar flies off from, Harry explores and improvises trying to find a center to his universe, where visions of cracked incisors don't haunt his every waking moment. Eventually the synths mirror the brass band from the 5th circle of hell, you are drawn into the vortex.
God Tits has dark death metal grinding bass and guitar, Harry expresses his need for God Tits and all they offer.
Motherfucker #1 closes the A-side going from howling noise to whispering atmospherics to disturb and unsettle you.
The B-side opens with Special Ed and all the classes he attended, with a slow acoustic riff for Harry to enunciate carefully over.
Is It Cool? To riff as heavy as this, while playing with yourself and looking at photos of the sexiest teeth you can find on the internet.
Grasshopper Mouth Shit Head grinds away like you've had a couple of grams of speed and can't stop grinding your teeth, vocals get angrier at what that Grasshopper Shit Head is up too.
Simple I Am slowed things down, like you're in recovery and the machines are bleeping, flip a coin on whether to dry out or get totally soused again. Just stop saying how simple he was, he may just freak out and call the Karma Police to watch him pull his own teeth out.
Ketamine Drip takes us deep into Harry's own personal k-hole where he moves and plays like a zombie, doing anything anyone asks of him, distain for a clean life, he ingests more Special k than anyone he knows, his mind has melted. Synths swirling around the dark hued riff seem light and fluffy.
The album closes with My Story that features sampled vocals from the films Graveyard Tramps and Loving Cousins that no matter how disturbing the lyrics are in this musical setting it almost feels pretty, despite being Loving Cousins.
