For this album, the ex-Duke Spirit singer takes a walk on the wild-ish side by relinquishing creative control and trusting in the dynamics of the production process.
Moss says “This album was the most spontaneous process I’ve been through in twenty years of recording songs …..I’ve spewed out lines and words which felt entirely led by the atmosphere of the music.”
The swirling loops and dark grooves produced by London duo IYEARA (Toby Butler, Malcolm Carson) are key to the ambience. The beat heavy influence of trip hop is more to the fore that the psychedelic dream pop of Moss’s previous work.
In the opening track,Prism,she sings of seeing the world in lateral ways and looking for empathy. Lyrics on the other nine tunes tap into ideas about conflict, power struggles, uncertainties, inner fears, rampant egos and setting new boundaries. The messages may be obtuse but the mood of the record carries a genuine sense of momentum and urgency.
