Review: 'EARLIES, THE'
'MORNING WONDER'

-  Label: '679 RECORDINGS'
-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '25th October 2004'

Our Rating:
Already a huge favourite from indie discos, pre-gig PAs and a highlight from THE EARLIES' recent debut album, "Morning Wonder" is again reanimated thanks to its' inclusion in the superb "Dead Man's Shoes" OST.

Not that we're complaining or anything. "Morning Wonder" is surely the pinnacle of the Burnley/ Texas boys' achievements to date, and another chance to revisit its' spacious, 'shroomy charms is most welcome. It still sounds as lovely as ever: all spacewalking, twangly guitars and dubbed-out, mantra-style bliss. It's got all the hallmarks of a classic that we'll hear many times over the years.

The flipsides, meanwhile, are pleasant enough, but hardly essential. "Kelly Brown" is a by-numbers exercise in shimmering, backwards-masked folkiness, while "Nature's Mistake" is slow, pulsing and keyboard-based. It's almost Warp-ish in design, carrying some of the earlier, almost naive feel of The Aphex Twin about it and would again work well in soundtrack form. Once again it's got a whiff of filler about it, but of the superior kind.

Anyway, these are really thumbnails. "Morning Wonder", though, is as beautiful a slice of shape-shifting psychedelic pop you'll be served all year. Sprinkle it with space dust and devour.
