Sam Lewis describes his first solo album in four years as ”a necessary evolution” from what he’s done before but it doesn’t seem like much of a departure to my ears.
Dreamy, laid-back folk with muted vocals is his stock in trade. Any personal growth in Lewis’ life doesn’t translate into any radical shift in his soporific musical style.
The red flag of a Dire Straits cover (Walk Of Life) gives fair warning of what to expect.
It was recorded at The Cabin Studio in Nashville and produced by Ethan Ballinger.
Special guests include Mikie Martel on flugelhorn and trumpet on two tracks, while JT Cure plays bass on Sappy Ending.
This is pleasant easy listening and not much more. Understated to the point of making no statement at all.
