Our Rating:
The Big Ol' Nasty Getdown are the Funky supergroup project helmed by John Heintz who for this project, that was recorded remotely during Lockdown and beyond, sent the same Jack irons drum track to 7 different bass players to add their parts and on the tapes went one musician at a time, till the tracks were ready to mix. This time around the band features members of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Primus, Fishbone, New Power Generation, 24-7 Spyz, P-Funk, Wallflowers, the Meters, Korn, Suicidal Tendencies, Empire Strikes Brass, Yo Mama's Big Fat Booty Band, the Fritz, Railroad Earth, Snarky Puppy, Moe, Les Claypool's Frog Brigade, the Innocent Criminals, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Boombox, Delta Nove, and Ozomatali along with Jack Irons, Cody Wright, Freekbass, Frank Mapstone, Philip Lassiter and musician and curator John Heintz.

The album has been issued in a deluxe gatefold sleeve with artwork from Jeff Wood that is quite stunning and a beautiful artifact in itself before you put on the clear purple splatter vinyl and use the glow in the dark slipmat that is art of the package.

The A-side starts as it means to continue with All Together Now a superfly deep groove funk monster of a tune, with a cool as can be brass section driving you all onto the dancefloor to spin and twirl along to the magical sounds, that guitar break comes in to take us to another level, they hit that groove that won't let go.

Body Magic (Ft RonKat Spearman) is lush, super deep, funky soul stew, allowing you to demonstrate all sorts of Body Magic on the dancefloor, while Ron implores you to get down and dirty with him, like he's been praying at the church of the latter-day Frankie Beverly, they bring the good times brass grooves.

420 Ocean Drive is fast driving cruising down the highway, soundtrack funk with the ever-present core brass section lifting it up, they take the curves with ease, while Eric McFadden's monster guitar solo rips through the centre.

The B-side opens with Spirit Stain (Ft Angelo Moore) is a bit more restrained with Angelo giving us all sorts of funky advice on how to remove that Spirit Stain and save yourself all the cosmic pain, good god y'all the groove Ra Diaz and Jimi Hazel lay down underlying this, will get you marching with Angelo with no effort at all.

Ten Hits is it of the bong or Ten Hits in the charts, either way this has more of a Jazz fusion feel, with Larry LaLonde's exploratory guitar disappearing into space, Filled by Mike Dillon's vibes and tabla.

Body Magic (Instrumental) just strips out the vocals and now sounds like a Funkadelic dancefloor workout, deep groove sensation, dig Nic Chaffee's brass and bust some moves.

Spirit Stain (Instrumental) is as lush as can be, feeling groovier without the vocals, like it's going all Philly soul dance sensation on us.
