THE WHITE STRIPES' new DVD "Live Under Blackpool Lights" finds the deadly Detroit duo bringing their manic blues-punk rush to the seaside in the depths of the English winter and ensuring the cockles of thousands of hearts are warmed up in the process.
In such a fervent atmosphere, the Whites' cover of Dolly Parton's country chestnut can't fail, really, and so it proves. Within seconds it's threatening to morph into a huge crowd singalong, and when Jack turns on the emotional waterworks before they kick the chorus up the arse, the audience are going suitably radio rental.
We're also treated to a revved-up, psyched-out ball of energy version of "Elephant" fave "Back Math", with the tempo changes swooping and menacing and Jack getting in touch with his primitive side to great effect. Sure, you know what to expect, but the excitement remains palpable.

Basically what we've come to expect from The White Stripes, then. Something substantial conjured from what seems very little on paper. How do they do it? Buggered if I know, but I'm (again) staying on board for the next instalment.
