Review: 'FLY ON THE WALL'
'BREAKTHROUGH'

-  Label: 'FLY ON THE WALL'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: 'MAY 2002'

Our Rating:
FLY ON THE WALL are one of a number of very tasty new outfits currently operating out of Cork and their debut EP "Breakthrough" makes it abundantly clear that you should make a point of getting ringside when they're next in your area.

Although they're liable to expand in numbers for live shows, FLY ON THE WALL are basically the brainchild of instrumentalist/ songwriter MARK LOREN and vocalist AIBHLIN. On this recording, they're augmented by producer ANDY REYNOLDS (on drums, guitar and keyboards) and violinist AOIFE DONOVAN on the sublime "Eyes Closed."

More about that track later. "Breakthrough", though, kicks off with the title tune. Fragile, attractive and sensibly embroidering AIBHLIN'S gorgeous vocal, "Breakthrough" is an understated acoustic beauty.

"Can I Fly" meanwhile, is something else again. Although it slides in on a gentle, vocal-fuelled intro, it soon changes pace and makes its' name as a strident, no-nonsense rocker before coming full circle.

"Eyes Closed", though, is perhaps the finest of the three tracks here. Floating in on harmonics-laden basslines, congas, ghostly violin and another sensual vocal, it's one of those great, naggingly pretty things you'll want to return to - and often.

FLY ON THE WALL are an encouraging prospect indeed. Proffering well-crafted songs devoid of obvious influence, theirs is an intimate and enticing sound that cocoons you with repeated listens.

"Breakthrough" is just that: a distinguished debut by anyone's standards. Don't let it pass you by.
