Britain, Winter 2004 and Goldie Lookin Chain surf the zeitgeist as the 21st Century offspring of The Barron Knights and Rhys Ifan’s character in ‘Notting Hill’.
I shouldn’t laugh as it will only encourage them but this puerile, infantile piece of trash makes me chuckle in a way that I thought I’d left far behind at school: you know that guilty laughter you can’t hold back when someone told a rude joke at the back of the classroom. By the time the punch-line “take your mother to the doctor’s ‘cos her front bum’s wrecked” reaches my ears I’m in a fit of giggles.

Despite all the swearing, graphic detail and the celebration of ignorance and stereotypes I find GLC far less offensive than Westlife doing Frank Sinatra and no more or less relevant and revealing than anything currently being said by the majority of ‘serious artists’ working in the chart dominant genres of rap, R ‘n’ B and hip-hop.
So I have stopped laughing then.
