'SPLIT EP'

Our Rating:
Because of some typically negative Brit indie snobbery, "split" Eps (originally two bands sharing the surfaces on vinyl) these days have a poor cred reputation.

However, the likes of this tasty 4-track item shows just how ridiculously prejudiced such notions are. Indeed this "Split EP" showcases two fine, vitriolic UK guitar outfits that are doing their indie mould-breaking thing with determination and confidence.

"Pleasurehead" is one of the darker horses stabled by the band's startlingly good "When Do We Start Fighting?" album, but it's none the worse for that. By SEAFOOD'S immolatory standards, it's unusually measured; a long intro giving way to sweet harmonies between DAVID LINE and CAROLINE BANKS. "You're so beautiful and you shine on me!" they coo before finally bringing on the heavy sonic artillery. Lovely.

Their live "Gun Trip" is scrappier, with strings bending and drumsticks flailing as SEAFOOD grasp for the feeling and eventually go down fighting.

Nonetheless, SEAFOOD continue to intrigue, while JETPLANE LANDING are little short of revelatory here. This is your reviewer's first taste and he's hooked. "What The Argument Has Changed" is especially shattering. Nasty riffs swing like meat hooks while furious drums try - and fail - to tame bucking bronco basslines. Lyrically, it's incredible, too. The hurting goes on forever in the lyrics and if anyone can better that "Fuck you and your opposite sex!" this year, I'll eat my NY Yankees hat.

Their second tune, "Summer Ends" is no slouch, either. Direct and spite-fuelled, it's very superior indie guitar rock with an acerbic edge. Can't wait to check out their "Zero For Conduct" album.

The "Split EP" proves conclusively that such manoeuvres need not be the domain of sad anoraks and anally retentive begrudgers and can be he best way to be introduced to hitherto unsung talent.
