Review: 'Star Circus, Crymwav And Syteria'
'Live at The Carty & Horses, Maryland Point.'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '28.3.25.'

Our Rating:
This was an old school Friday rock night at the Cart & Horses pub in gentrified Maryland Point in East London, so much nicer than it was back in the 70's and 80's, this was an upside-down bill as the real headliners for us went on first.

Syteria opened as they normally do with Guilty, a great blast of hard rock with the first of Jackie Chambers concise guitar solos, they kicked into a higher gear for I'm All Woman and I'm sure Julia Calvo really is, they had bundles of energy as Steph's super solid bassline anchored everything going in in Chasing Dreams.

Julia put down her guitar for the rampage that was Hit Me and halfway through she remembered she needed her tambourine to emphasize the chorus, once she had her guitar back on it was time for Remember Me, well we certainly won't forget seeing Jackie's almost 62 birthday performance. Julia asked if we were ready for a Revolution, well in the current climate the answer has to be yes, the sooner the better.

They then made clear people are Monsters that most of the crowd sang along to it sounds so good live, we were then all encouraged to Make Some Noise and couldn't resist doing so, they nailed it. They then closed as they normally do by throwing out sweets for the trick or treat section of Halloween and Jackie managed to score a direct hit on my Girlfriend Jo's chin, that thankfully didn't hurt as much as when Geoffrey Oi!Cott hit her with a tennis ball at Rebellion a few years ago, still Halloween was loads of fun as was the rest of the set.

After the break it was time for the album launch show by Los Angeles hard rockers Crymwav for the new album 24/7 they are an old school hard riffing band with two Flying V's who opened telling us what they want on Loup Garou that isn't a tribute to the rave band with a similar name but had some real heavy riffage.

They then tackled the Tech bro's on Mars Fever that had loads of interplay between Roger Deering and Lloyd Stuart Casson's flying V's giving them a real Detroit style hard rock edge. Roger introduced Chop Chop as a new song, it wasn't about the band of that name either, it had a real grind to the riffage. Next up was recent single Sense Of Adventure that saw Bruce Braddock really letting rip on bass, before Roger told us his 101 Damnations that was bitter angry and full on in our faces.

They then hoped the riffs in Contagious would be stuck in our heads for weeks, full on rock histrionics at the ready. Roger took his flying v off for American Carnage that makes clear how dismayed they are at what America has done in recent years, before they closed this ram raid of a set with a charge through Make Like A Panther to leave us wanting a little more from Crymwav.

After the break Star Circus finished off the night with some glam metal, last time I saw them opening for Syteria I was having trouble seeing clearly, having been at the Notting Hill carnival all day, this time with a clearer head they made clear from the opener that they Didn't Want Another Romance no they probably just wanted some easy action, bitter twisted lyrics made clear on Chained To You, with some great twisted glam guitar from Santiago Periotti.

As with last time we saw them Just Like In A Movie was a highlight of the set as Sophie Youngs bassline drove it on. For Over & Over they went to two guitars rather than three and had more keyboards on a song that wanted to be somewhere between Skid Row and Soraya.

When They Get Together was my guess for the next tune that had some guitar fireworks. Bridges was decent enough, but best song of the set this time was Gina In A Bottle a proper blast of drunk out your brains glam metal, latest single One Hit Wonder that seemed to pass me by completely. The next song Before stuck with the glammy formula and was tight and rocked well enough, before they closed with Save Your Life which is what they hope Glam metal will do for you in a Bon Jovi scarves in the air kinda way.

They came back for an encore of Fire Woman that had more life to it than the last time I saw The Cult murder it, it also showed that they could be a brilliant glam metal covers band.
