Review: 'Lewis, Jeffrey'
'The Even More Freewheeling'

-  Label: 'Blang Records'
-  Genre: 'Folk' -  Release Date: '21.3.25.'

Our Rating:
The Even More Freewheeling Jeffrey Lewis is his homage of sorts to the classic Bob Dylan album The Freewheeling Bob Dylan, making plain the homage he recreates Bob's original artwork in the same location only Jeffrey and his Girl are naked. For this album Jeffrey is backed by The Voltage who are Brent Cole, Mem Pahl and Mallory Feuer and was produced Roger Moutenot in Nashville over 4 days.

The album opens with Do What Comes Natural a rather wordy, yet sparse folk song, with some minimal organ and tambourine, for all the things that come natural to Jeffrey, like being and asshole while not wanting to go out to museums, or anything ese for that matter. The list in this song becomes ever more convoluted, yet clear, to why he should Do What Comes Natural.

Movie Date what shall you see, and will you remain awake through whatever film Jeffrey chooses for you to watch, this is a familiar pattern for many of us, even if I am often the one falling asleep halfway through that classic.

DCB & ARS a fiddle led country rock ode to doing illegal things, together with the one you lust after, you want her to be the Bonnie to your Clyde, love and lust intertwined with the danger of a mutually loving crimewave. This song was written after a suggestion by David Berman of Silver Jews.

Sometimes Life Hits You so you need to duck to get out the way, but really you need to just scream "Ow fuck that hurt" and get on with it, you'll want to chant along to that sweary chorus while wondering where you know the riff and piano parts from.

Tylenol PM isn't an advertorial from an artist who refuses to let his songs be used for advertising purposes, just the pain of insomnia getting to him, with the slow violin and tambourine backing, might help you drift off quicker than those tablets will. He lists several of his heroes and the drugs most associated with them and hopes that he won't be remembered as the Tylenol kid.

Just Fun is a super speedily sung song that has echoes of Aaron Beckum with the reminiscences of their parents and family, that is sung so speedily you'll need to hear it four or five times just to get all the things going in the lyrics a quite brilliantly fun song.

Relaxation is not for Jeffrey it leads to oblivion and those who seeks oblivion, it's as attractive as an atomic winter, just don't relax keep going, keep busy don't stop doing loads of stuff all the time, anything but succumbing to the sin of Relaxation, instead they have a total psychedelic freak out.

Inger is sad and downbeat, like most songs I've heard in recent years about anyone called Inger, although all of those were about Inga Maria Hauser the murdered German teenager, this is about a different Inger emigrating to New York hoping for adventure, hoping that journey is worthwhile and she gets the truly enlightening experiences she hopes to gain, sparse folk guitar helps to go through her life, she reaches her 30's rather than never making it out of her teens.

100 Good Things is recorded live as Jeffrey lists his 100 Good Things that happen in his life, he is proud to be an underground legend on a semi global level.

The album closes with The Endless Unknown a violin led lament for all the things he can't explain, full of ugly skeletons of pain and sorrow while sounding a bit like Silos.
