Review: 'The Maggots'
'The (Early) Maggots'

-  Label: 'Chaputa Records'
-  Genre: 'Punk/New Wave' -  Release Date: '16.5.25.'

Our Rating:
The (Early) Maggots does exactly that, bringing early mono recordings from Swedish garage punks The Maggots recorded way back in the late 90's by Mans Mannson, Jens Lindberg and Anders Oberg who from the sounds of it were all hopped up on Aquavit and fika and going insane.

The A-side opens with the screamed intro of Apeman 2000 who sounds like he comes from the late sixties, this is prime time trashy garage punk with a Sonics meets the Trashmen feel, loads of yelps and guitars that don't let up.

Two Ft Tall is that moment when you fall in love with a woman who is only Two Ft Tall and she get the better of you, the insane grinding guitars and wailed vocals get to the heart of this particular fetish, she gets him so drunk he loses his mind.

Grr they are bitter and angry that they don't own every Nomads record ever released, while that gnaws at their mind, this song of love gone wrong blasts out of the speakers, sounding like it was recorded with old speakers with torn cones, the guitar solo totally blasts away.

Stop Messing With My Mind they've had enough of your judgement, taking the piss out of the clothes they wear, they just won't have it, they let rip at all the doubters, expecting them to keep up with modern life and not seem stuck in the Sixties.

Enough Of What I Need is far more low-fi, rehearsal tape feel, for a song that has a Kinks feel to it, a wailing guitar solo that feels like they have really got what they need, a new fuzz pedal.

Uh! Uh! - The Bigger The Better yep they have fallen for someone who makes Rosie seem skinny and they want to shoot her full of super frazzled guitars.

Gotta Sneeze Now has a Booker T feel to the driving bass and drums as they re-work some classic garage rock riffs for that moment when they let rip with one huge sneeze, not quite the sort you get after sniffing a huge line of Speed, either way that sneeze will take them to outer space.

Give Me (Someone To Hurt) has them cruising for a bruising like their girlfriends have run off to Klippans Centrum with some other guy and they want retribution.

The B-side opens with Evil Ways that are the only kind they know, they try to sound louder than Gonn, you'll never cure their Evil Ways.

Gonna Make You pay for running off with your mums Peps Persson records, damn they are Gonna Make You Pay for that transgression and the ones in the song, while fuzzed up guitars obliterate your mind.
Last Time Around they are not putting up with you no more, they've had it, they just wanna make one more garage rock nugget, rather than spend time with you, so you can tell them to sod off, but they were going anyway.

Living Is Pain things are getting tougher, they crave being alone rather than being in some shared apartment, they hate society and everyone they can, they wanna be with people like them and maybe Stupidity, proper Fleshtones obsessives, someone they can talk about the Purple People Eaters and The Playn Jayn with.

I Don't Need To Shave a real teenage anthem, with a raw Bobby Fuller Four style song, with cheeky lyrics, they try to grow more than some bum fluff, proving to their mums, that they really don't need to be clean shaven, they don't want to sound like Farmer John if they can help it.

I Wanna Be Your Maggot and they are desperate to show you Tom Thumb and get you to play with their maggots, they have a super charged guitar freak out.

Yeah Yeah (Look At Him Cry) they have reduced some chump to tears by running off with his woman, they are gonna celebrate this victory, at least until she runs off with some other guy, this is frenzied like they are gonna come far too soon to keep that girl.

Now You Say Were Through we'll have to try and re-work Patti Smiths Ghost Dance and just bare every last bit of soul they have, it's time for them to be the chump with tears rolling down his face aww.
