Gianni Tbay's Blues Against Youth is the Seventh album by Turin blues man Gianni Tbay this time around rather than being a one-man band, he has a full compliment of backing musicians led by Gugliemo Nodari who also mixed the album, alongside Davide Richichi, Luca Colombrita, Andrea Rossi, Simone Pozzi and Chiara Mantovanelli. The album was recorded at Rubedo Studio by Manuel Volpe. The Blues Against Youth are currently on tour in the UK and Sardinia in August.
The album opens with Lost And Sound a harmonica led blues for those of us that are always lost searching for the perfect sounds, this has a cool woozy feel as he chases all over town looking for that jelly roll and the coolest sound in town.
Discomfort Zone takes a really comfortable chugging blues rhythm, for Gianni to discuss all the things that bring him discomfort in this most tortured of modern life, just where do you draw the line.
Learn This Right has a jug band blues feel a bit like Mungo Jerry, with some nice loose guitar, they go down those railroad tracks once more, hopefully learning your lessons before it's too late.
What A Find he's out on the prowl trying to find some smoke and drink and well all the delights of the night, when he happens upon just what he seeks, He sounds like he's happy drooling over how she looks, it seems life is good once more.
Goin' To California takes the Jimmie Rodgers classic California Blues from the dustbowl, picking their way through the trail that leads to the alleged promised land of California complete with some down home yodelling.
Low-Swinging Bad News is something sadly the world is full of these days, this slowly chugs along allowing Gianni to tell us just how bad things have got, so bad we need a very New Orleans style blues trumpet solo to help take the pain away.
I'll Try Not To be a complete pain in the derriere of anyone else, they pledge to not hurt anybody, I wish I could remember which hardcore punk act has a song with the same sentiments, either way this message needs ramming into the heads of all our politicians.
That Devilish Melody In You burns bright this has a denser sound, more keyboard driven with an insistent groove ramming the point home, before the end sample makes the point even clearer.
How Can You Do It? Takes the John Lee Hooker classic and has a nice country blues feel to it, with the vocals flying around that insistent guitar line and the beat coming from the tambourine.
Snake Away just seems to slither away behind the fancy finger picking, like you need to evaporate before anyone catches on to what you've been up to on the ambient noise outro.
The album closes with Emissions of blues empathy for a world tearing itself apart, will the world go to hell because we can't stop all those poisonous Emissions, when we could save everyone with one more imperious blues tune.
