How Did We Fall So Far is the debut album by London based Singaporean/English Indie goth alternative band Coming Up Roses who are Emily Sera, Darius Oon, Charlie Wilson and Caleb Blake who recorded the album at ICMP Studios and 310 Studios in London and Revolution Recording in Toronto, it was produced by Andrea Trevisan.
The album bursts into life with Hello Miss Anxiety that's on edge, full of the worries and pain of modern life played out over some searing college rock guitars and super steady beat. I'm In Bed is slower almost like Downy Mildew, this has a sense of longing before it goes quite widescreen and full on, hopefully she'll find a cure for what ails her and has put her in bed, the multitracked vocals on the chorus will draw you in, before the spoken word section makes clear some of the causes of her agony.
Early single Over Your Head is for those things you wish someone would really get, but they fly Over Your Head and your oblivious to what they should mean to you, this reminds me of the poppier end of Lacuna Coil, the guitars are flying all over the place and it has very full production.
Little Guy has downbeat feelings for a Little Guy who gets all sorts of stick for well being a Little Guy, how do you get past that and get the respect you deserve, you need to beat those bullies and find your own way through, epic guitars urging you on to better things.
Billie And Allie are caught up in life's travails, trying to think of the best way through the malaise, try to put the bad things to one side, avoid all the insults don't let that pain show, try to keep your emotions in check, at least until you are safely far away from those seeking to give you a hard time.
Tired actually sounds totally wired and full of amphetamine energy, while Emily tells us she's Tired and running round in circles, will this never end, the guitars soar doing everything they can to keep her awake.
Gotta Lose It All or you'll never learn how to recover and rebuild your life, all the sleepless nights and pain and suffering that have her at the end of her rope threatening it all, the song uses loud quite dynamics to emphasize the drama in the lyrics.
I Miss You opens with just the vocals and a piano with Emily pouring out her feelings with strings and slow thoughtful percussion being added, becoming grander while expressing all the sorrows of loss she feels.
Awake is an intense blast of guitars and raging drums to help make sure you don't go totally out of your mind at everything happening around and to you. It seems to race away towards the end like they are on a speeding train.
The album closes with the title song How Did We Fall So far that opens with a sparse intro and carefully sung lyrics making clear the vast ocean between where we are and where we wanted to be. The loneliness felt through the gentle acoustic guitars being strummed and the pain in Emily's voice.
