Review: 'Static Lives'
'Modest'

-  Label: 'Criminal Records'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: '14th November 2025'

Our Rating:
 New single no 1
Static Lives continue their understated yet unquestionably significant rise – off the back of a sold-out debut tour and subsequent live dates in the early Autumn with a new single in the shape of ‘Modest’.

It may be that having gained a following both with Weekend Recovery and as a solo artist, Lori has brought a few fans in early, and that being signed to Criminal Records has helped raise awareness of the band, but more than anything, it seems that they’ve built much of their momentum organically, by simple virtue of being good. And ‘Modest’ is proof of this.

Steeped in ‘80s analogue vibes, is melds synth pop and post-punk in a perfect synthesis. The melody is strong, weaving a balance of sing-song accessibility with a hint of wistful melancholy, all draped in a huge swathe of reverb. It’s got groove, it’s got hooks… it’s everything you could possibly want from a single, and at the same time, reminds us of much of what’s absent in so much of the mass-produced plastic pop being produced now. It’s true that the same criticism was made of contemporary music in the 80s by people over the age of forty – but little did they know what the future would hold, eh?
