A Strange Loop is a debut album of absorbing and atmospheric ambient music from a London ensemble headed by composer Tim Harrison who plays piano, marimba and synthesisers.
Despite its title, no looping was allowed in the recording. Everything was captured in real time and mostly on tape. It was subsequently subjected to further analogue processing and a re-recording of the transformed sound was then mixed by Richard Formby.
This is seemingly a painstakingly long process since the 40 minutes of music took 9 years to complete.
It features more than 50 musicians, including saxophonist Jack Wyllie of Portico Quartet and the Ligeti String Quartet.

Given it cinematic quality, it comes as no surprise to learn that Harrison has composed music for films. He has contributed sound design for notable British titles like Prano Bailey-Bond’s Censor and Peter Strickland’s Flux Gourmet.
As titles like Nocturne and Ode to Void suggest, a brooding sense of menace looms over the finished result.
