Our Rating:
Oh sweet mother of all that is geekdom. How many times can you fail to rewrite Vince Clarke's "Only You"? How many pale but competent synthpop echoes of ERASURE and BRONSKI BEAT can one New York City stand? Never mind Europe or the British Isles.

Digital recording and longer human life make at least the recent past permanently present. 1982 is never less than a few mouse clicks or iPod spins away. Even better, the stars of the mid 80s are all up and about and touring. Come in ERASURE, your new album is up and ready to sell. So why would anyone want to listen to the class of 2004 patiently rebuilding dull facsimiles?.

I guess the people who like it will find it. They have different cultural antennae to me, and THE MYSTIC UNDERGROUND don’t need reviews by generalist music critics who have a broad but approximate appreciation of the last 50 years of pop music. The internetweb thing makes a space for all tastes and all desires and Google has becomes the guide.

So if you love ERASURE or DEPECHE MODE and their near relatives so much that you’re prepared to listen to pastiche versions by someone else … www.themysticunderground.com is your destination of choice.
