To be honest, GOMEZ have blown rather hot and cold with me previously, and my suspicions about their dubious English white boy Delta Blues shtick have yet to be blown apart.
Consequently, "Shot Shot" does pretty well in the perception – dismantling stakes, coming on as a hard – edged (but not unpleasant) surprise and piling out of the speakers with some real purpose; the rhythm section alone capable of razing a standard size semi-detached of their own volition.
Actually, the low riding acoustic riffing at the beginning is sufficient to drag you in, and that’s before the wobbly theremins, farty saxes and (I think) Ben Ottewell’s menacing rasp of a vocal slap your cheeks around a bit. Though I’m not entirely sure why, it’s pretty unsettling altogether the way he sings: "found a good reason, do it for the money/ what’s wrong with that?"

Hitting the tape at only a tad over the two minute mark, "Shot Shot" is probably too brief, too heavy and too damn quixotic for real chart action, but while I await the album before preaching about conversion, "Shot Shot" certainly pricked up ears around here. More of this uncompromising fare, please
