Lucky Now is the latest album by Lande Hekt who has recently moved back to her Childhood hometown of Exeter from Bristol, the album was recorded and produced by Matthew Simms, the only other musician credited is her old collaborator Samuel Bedford who she was in Selfish Son with.
The A-Side opens with Kitchen II a sweet love song for the girl you spend candlelit evenings with, in a kitchen, this is sparsely instrumented indie pop, similar to Suggested Friends and Bean Tupou. Lucky Now the title track is about trying to find yourself, moving past old traumas and finding new horizons where you can be yourself, promises of sobriety will always be broken no matter how much you sound like The Cords.
Rabbits isn't about Dave Clagues Rabbit paintings he sells in Bristol, it isn't a tribute to the Siren poem of the same name, this is more existential, while you see the Rabbits in the fields and wonder what happens when they disappear below ground, to play old Marine Girls records from the sound of this.
Favourite Shoes is obviously in tribute a special pair and the magic feelings you have while wearing them, this will sound great played after Favourite Shirt, although this has harder guitars than that does, being more in the vein of Salvation Sunday.
Middle Of The Night a late-night plea full of revealed feelings and yearnings, slow picked banjo and acoustic strumming played with hushed reverence, this kitchen sink drama unfurls gently.
The B-side opens with Circular is a good description of the main guitar figure everything else goes off from, guitars are widescreen the vocals remain crystalline clear and pure sounding, while she questions what we should believe about how to change the world into a better place than it currently is.
A Million Broken hearts is about our totally broken political systems that totally fail normal people, how on earth we get our so-called leaders to do the right thing, is a nothing left to lose question, perfect for jangling indie pop.
My Imaginary Friend will always put up with your nonsense, turning up late, not closing the gate etc, all the things your partner complains about, this is sweet in a Talulah Gosh way, the guitars will draw you in to this spry song.
The Sky is laid back reflective indie pop for gorgeous days laying back staring at the sky, while all your normal traumas carry on around you, can your love resolve in the time you take staring at the sky, rather than having the arguments continually revolving around your head, no you didn't ruin your life by doing what you wanted too.
Submarine is meant in the current parlance rather than in the sea faring type, this has a wholesome Sundays vibe while trying to solve all the issues that have been gnawing at you lately, how to negotiate your relationships happily.
The LP closes with Coming Home a wistful slightly ethereal indie pop song for the joy and happiness to be found when you have decided that Coming Home is what you want to do for now.
