The second single from cosmopolitan London-based four-piece THE CONWAY STORY - who named themselves after a 17th Century female philosopher, as you do – is preceded by a rising head of steam. Their debut ‘Even When The Wind Blows’ received a W&H “Freetime Thumbs Up” last November so four months down the line there’s an understandably heated froth of heightened expectation.
The pregnant pause that follows the opening three chord chime of electric guitar leaves me half-expecting U2’s ‘Desire’ to burst forth but instead ‘Lunatic Perfume’s’ maelstrom of riff-infused noise definitely, not maybe, releases the heady scent of full on Oasis. The impact is made all the more startling given the realisation that by the end of the song it’s a jugular approach they’ve managed to commandeer effortlessly as their own.
Sexy, slinky and decidedly hot under the collar, the sweaty aroma of ‘Lunatic Perfume’s’ music perfectly captures the song’s preoccupations with pheremonally charged boys losing their reason and inhibitions while chasing game girls during those balmy summer months, their breathless endeavours culminating in “mistakes all over the sofa”. Ooer.

Other track ‘Ten Days’ uncages a refreshingly different whiff of riff and roll: a strident and forthright tune offering a touch of keyboard with acoustic guitar to the fore in a verse that quickly winds up to the electrical storm of the chorus containing its “you’ve got culture, but I’ve got soul” lyrical pay-off. Frontman Nik Owens possesses a fine voice that reminds me of no-one in particular but manages to sound different on both tracks, adding a valuable quiver to THE CONWAY STORY’s dashing bow.
Well worth sniffing out.
