Our Rating:
I always shit myself when I hear the word 'Geordie' related to anything to do with music. Must be something to do with the Wildhearts. And Jimmy Nail. So probably best I don't think about it too much.

This is Newcastle 4-piece CALVOON's debut release building on what their PR calls "superb live reputation". I've yet to hear them live and on the basis of this release don't know whether I’ll be knocking down doors... However there is a spiky pop sensibility to this single that some will like.

Pat Collier (responsible for The Wonder Stuff, Primal Scream, Soft Boys and The House Of Love in the past) produced "Come On" with hsi usual pizazz. The song switches on with guitars that buzz and chop, the singer's slightly distorted and snarling, and ready to take you apart, yet all but the chorus of "Come On!" is indecipherable. But that's probably all you need to know as far as lyrical content goes. Calvoon aren't here to ponder philosophically on the order of things, merely to have a good time and take their audience with them.

B side (or is it double A?) "Last Chance" is more hollow sloganeering, the lyrics surprisingly telling you that, um, "This is The Last Chance / This is the Last chance.... [etc]". There's melody and a tune, and for my money this should have been the A-side, but they’re only young and this is their first release. So time's probably on their side.

The teens will love it. My cynical ears have heard it all before and I’d say the band have got a fight on there hands to compete with the NME beloved and pretend sophisticates of the bands so in vogue at the moment. You can hear the blood in their music: I'm sure Calvoon will relish the fight ahead.
