Review: 'HIGGINS, BERTIE'
'THE REDNECK RIVIERA'

-  Label: 'Sony Music Publishing'
-  Genre: 'Alt/Country' -  Release Date: 'March 2005'

Our Rating:
From the early '80s comes singer/songwriter Bertie Higgins, entering a time capsule that has propelled him to the 21st century. Thankfully, the years have been kind as this giddy and catchy-beyond-description CD single shows no wrinkles whatsoever. Best known for the moving ballad "Key Largo," long a staple of Adult Contemporary radio, Higgins has refashioned himself as a full-throttle country rocker on "The Redneck Riviera."

Its Southern authenticity owing much to Higgins' bluesy vocals, "The Redneck Riviera" is a drunken joyride, the kind of track that'll raise eyebrows in London pubs but should be a smash in the States. It's raw with smokin' riffs, danceable fiddling, and a hook-laden chorus that plants itself in the brain, refusing to let go. Hell, I'm charmed. Bring out the booze, I say.
