'RUSSIAN DOLL'

-  Genre: 'Indie' -  Release Date: '11th April 2005'-  Catalogue No: 'BBQ386CD'

Our Rating:
DEAD FLY BUCHOWSKI'S debut single "Blackout" made a satisfyingly punishing noise, and with its' higher-profile follow-up "Russian Doll" they're at it again, proffering mental staccato riffing and drums which nail your liver to the floor. And that's just the intro. Ulp.

When the guitars power in and it all settles down a bit, vocalist Roddy gives it some 'messy and aggressive'. It's exciting and garage-y without ever sounding like the class of 2002 and also sensibly includes basslines of the classic, twangy Rickenbacker variety just for good measure. The guitar solo is brief and splenetic and then they throw a spanner in the works when the whole thing slows down before it hits the fade. Oh OK: I hadn't expected that. But it's neat when you get used to it.

Hang around and you'll realise Dead Fly Buchowski mischievously enjoy pumping up the eclecticism too. "Overcast" swings low and sweetly diseased with punkily metallic riffs and a prevailing air of menace a la Nick Cave or Mark Lanegan. It's a murky tale of storm, stress and wilderness, though Roddy's attempts to sound like an indie Paul Rodgers are rather mystifying and a little tough to take.   The closing "One Of These Days" throws a further curve, turning down the amps and bringing out the acoustics. Roddy's opening gambit ("You are the love that came too soon") is something of a red herring, as he sounds lonely and effectively defiant when he hits the chorus: "One of these days you will rise up, you'll throw to the floor your coffee cup." Yeah, insurrection! Or maybe not. Whatever, it sounds cool and suggests DFB may have a few less obvious strings to their bow.

Certainly this band have SOMETHING that's not horribly easily defined and it's already sounding like a strength to these ears. The present Scottish scene is already crawling with talent and Dead Fly Buchowski are already making like another band to place smart money upon. Anyone fancy putting me up in Glasgow or Edinburgh for, ooh, about the next two years?
