Review: 'HEROIC TRIO'
'SUMMERTIME (EP)'

-  Label: 'GHOST MANAGEMENT'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'NOVEMBER 2002'

Our Rating:
Fucking hell, this is good. It's not often your reviewer comes upon bands barely out of the traps who sound so confident and aggressive as York/ Nottingham triumvirate HEROIC TRIO, but this is definitely the business. It's fully-formed and fantastic.

OK, so with their mixed gender line-up and kinetic, sexual tension themes, the closest comparisons here are kindred spirits Throwing Muses and (especially) the original PJ Harvey line up circa "Dry", but during the course of "Summertime"s three tracks, HEROIC TRIO embark on their very own sweet'n'savage sonic seduction.

All three tracks are cool and unsettling, with this writer particularly bowled over by "Dead Or Alive" and the closing "Tarantella." The former marries busy rhythms with Nicola Underdown's burping basslines and a magic chorus ("It's hard to dance with the devil on your back"), while "Tarantella" features scarily sweet harmonies from Nicola and Sarah Moore ("Why d'you fuck my head so badly?" - woah!) and drumming from Ned Potter that could rival Fugazi's Brendan Canty. A serious compliment.

By the time its' reached its' lengthy and tempestuous climax you feel massively exhilarated. As a name, it seems HEROIC TRIO is a statement of fact rather than an idle threat, with this cracking EP already raising the stakes. A very different kind of tension, indeed.
