Review: 'BLACK VELVETS, THE'
'3345'

-  Label: 'MERCURY RECORDS'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '14th March 2005'

Our Rating:
Any band that claims to sound like a mix of Led Zeppelin with Beatles-like melodies, certainly deserves further investigation. Add to the fact that this is released as a 7 inch plectrum-shaped picture disc, then, if nothing else, they've certainly got our attention

THE BLACK VELVETS, a Liverpudlian four-piece, released their debut single 'Get On Your Life' last November to critical acclaim from various sections of the music press, and this second single, '3345', is almost certain to raise their profile even further.

Unfortunately, they don't sound like Led Zep crossed with The Beatles. More like Bon Jovi crossed with Reef. Still, in the meantime, that should guarantee them plenty of radio airplay, as well as the odd stadium support slot.

'3345' is a homage to the bar of the same name in Liverpool's Parr Street, where the band spent their formative years. A rousing, anthemic barnstormer of a song, '3345' is bursting at the seams with driving riff-laden guitars, a tight-as-fuck rhythm section and, of course, a big sing-a-long chorus.

But, it's lead singer Paul Carden's strong vocals that really catch the ear here. Sounding, as he does, like a Northern Jon Bon Jovi, Carden delivers his rough-hewn lines as if his life depends on it.

The band, who, in their short time together, have already supported the likes of The Who, John Squire and Razorlight, plan to release their debut album in May, and are already penciled in for appearances at this year's Glastonbury, Reading and T In The Park festivals.

We've got a feeling in our water here at W&H, and remember, you heard it here first; The Black Velvets are gonna be huge.
