Review: 'MAGIC NUMBERS, THE'
'Leeds, Cockpit, 18th May 2005'

-  Genre: 'Indie'

Our Rating:
Occasionally an Indie-related band comes along that captures the sound of summer. THE MAGIC NUMBERS are such a band: they have got to be the most happy outfit you'll ever see. They never stopped smiling for a milisecond this evening!

With a chiming, melodic sound filling the Cockpit, they treated us to generous guitar riffs and catchy basslines and proceeded to haul us into their sunkissed world, leaving us in no doubt they are a band to look out for before the year ends. Assuredly, they are gonna be big.

The sound of Magic Numbers is constructed by songwriter Romeo who is the talented lead singer/song writer. His colleagues are drummer Sean and their sisters, bassist Michelle and melodica player/ second singer Angela. Together, they make a heavenly racket, putting together a melodic, harmonic forty five minutes that throws you back into the heyday of the late sixties.

Using inspiration from many sources such as '60s harmony groups Mamas and The papas and Lovin' Spoonful they also excel when presenting us with the occasional bluesy, ballad-style entanglement.

The feeling of the "flower power" era flows from the well-paced set and you are taken on journey to a mood that's akin to a natural high. This reflected on the crowd with great effect, who dug their music to a (wo)man. The Magic Numbers are wholly starry eyed and romantic, though the whole thing was utterly laid back and we were only occasionally treated to an extended guitar break.

Now and again, you'd be happy if they pushed themselves a tad and let in more mood, but overall there was a great response from the crowd, and when the band played "Forever Lost", their new single - out next Monday - it's true to say they had us eating out of their hands.

This is the most laid back gig I've ever been to. On this showing, Romeo's boast about his troops being "the festival band of the summer" is not without substance.
