Our Only Fault Is Existing is the third album by Feverdreamt who are one of Vlimmer mainman Alexander Leonard Donat's other bands, he is based in Berlin and this album is about the slow collapse of the world as we once knew it.
The album opens with Pure Existence with a slow ambient intro, guitars are plucked and dark questions about Pure Existence are slowly thoughtfully discussed, why is purity so hard to find, among the dark demeanour infusing everything inside of us.
Paradox Punch has choral backing vocals over the carefully strummed acoustic guitar, for the pain you feel when you've been gut punched again, by any number of modern Paradoxes that perplex us all, trying to figure out how to change the narrative and direction we are headed in, the sense of dread slowly builds.
Shadow Catching Up sounds like a line from Jack Kerouac's Dr Sax, the spooky goings on, that mean The Shadow is after you once more, those thoughts chime in to the current malaise, this seeks to find a way through, dark imprecations and interplay between the bass and acoustic guitars, add a sense of the impossibility of escaping the Shadow's clutches.
Waiter Without Guests stands waiting hopefully for some diners to arrive, but prices have risen so high no one can afford to eat at his restaurant anymore, this delves into the ennui of unaffordability, ambient tones encouraging the chamber orchestra and brass section to get it together and make enough noise to bring people inside.
The Buildings Whisper Your Name over a slow piano line, that echoes in a vast empty building, that is desperate to be occupied once more, a choir slowly enunciates the plea, dark tonalities begin to rise to fill the space, can it kill the pain, well in very different ways to how Ruts do it.
Today's Horrors cannot be forgotten and nothing that happens tomorrow can ever make what's happened recently right once more, switching between the driven piano and drums and a society rotting to its core, falling apart while we are hollow in our opposition to all the madness around us.
All Is Breaking Away is a dark folk song for our times, all the dread most of us feel, over an ancient folk tune, reworked with minimalistic effects, the feeling that All Is Breaking Away from what used to be moral certainties, we have entered an age of never-ending panic, for what we all see unfolding before our disbelieving eyes.
The album closes On A High Note? Featuring the most minimal piano lines and dark depressed vocals trying to find one last High Note, while the world collapses around us, Il Nino swoops in to bring the chaos we deserve, the atmospherics make sure you are feeling anything but high by the end of this album.
