Review: 'KUBB'
'London, Camden Dublin Castle, 13th June 2005'

-  Genre: 'Rock'

Our Rating:
I was pretty excited to see KUBB last Monday, as I had seen them on Jools Holland show the Friday before, and I thought they were truly something else. Not bad for a band that was virtually unknown to make a breakthrough on BBC2’s prime time music show. They reminded me of bands such as Muse, which I have always been a fan of, but without the Goth but more of the chino-501 Levis jeans look of bands of the late eighties.

Kubb are an amalgamation of bands / singers such as Muse, Coldplay and Jeff Buckley with a certain edgy approachable twist. The electronic synthesis of their melodic rock songs, and the greatness and soulfulness of lead singer Harry Collier's voice account for that originality the band possess. Harry’s voice was so great in fact that he was spotted by Rollo of Faithless fame at a birthday dinner at the restaurant where Collier was working at. Rollo was so impressed that he had invited him along to his studio, and the rest as they say is history. Kubb are now newly signed to Mercury Records and are comprised of four members, Harry Collier on guitar/lead vocals, John Tilley on keyboards, and Dom Greensmith (formerly in the band Reef) on drums and Adj on guitar/vocals.

Their performance at the Dublin Castle, in Camden was an intimate affair, and a very busy one at that, it was probably the most promising band on the bill that week. Their strong heart-felt songs such as "Somebody Else" captivated the audience, who appeared at times to be very familiar with the most of songs performed. The Jeff Buckley-esque familiarity in all the songs, capturing the beauty, the intensity, with a tragic undertone. Other songs included the ballad "Sun", "Alcatraz", the piano sing-along "Wicked Soul" and their next single "Remain". When something is good, words seem to fail me, my advice to you would be to go and see them, you’ll love them.
