Our Rating:
In advance of two gigs at the Fibbers venue on July 21st and 22nd in York the York Music Collective have issued a 5 track CD to let people know how the once music-free zone that is York is becoming something a good bit noisier. How those City Fathers of yore would be tearing at their side whiskers!

Pioneers THE HAIR lead the parade. It’s their "Brick Supply", of course. Which is just a great opener for any occasion.

BLACK NIGHT CRASH do a biceps and bollocks rendition of a good bluesy rock thing, guitar and vocals following each other around to good effect. "classic" is a good word for it. "Heard it before" is not out of place either. But promising nonetheless. Skilfully done, without doubt.

DELTA VOLTS are a bit further out there. Some scary industrial disposal noise precedes a pulsing bass and rhythm track. Philip K. Dick has a notebook somewhere in the general night time in the city sound collage. And there's a song too, which is a bonus. File under, yes, watch out for Delta Volts.

AKP barge into contention with that dga dga dgaa   dga dga dgaa   dga dga dgaa thing that guitarists do when they have a black t shirt and a slightly odd looking guitar shape. The singing on "Lost, I Escape" is first class and the tune is adventurously open. Nothing too forced, plenty of power in reserve. But still a bit generic. File under good live prospect for the three band rock/metal night. (and await the genre -appeal hearing for confirmation).

RED:SHIFT are punctuation innovators. Their sense of melody is basic, their playing on the rudimentary side. But they have the good sense to keep it simple and everything works as planned. I think it’s heavy metal but the sleeve says "Dark, melodic post-punk" which sounds about right too. It’s moody authemticity is right there.

As part of a growing scene, this set of bands and tunes taken together can only be a good thing. All the bands have something valid to say, and working/playing with each other is going to push the expectations and experiments in more adventurous directions. Good work, York. Now that "The Industry" has pretty well turned its back on artist development, collectives of this kind are worth encouraging. Among CDs of this kind there are going to be some gems and some future stars.
