Review: 'TEN SECONDS OF CHAOS'
'On Second Thoughts EP'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: 'Summer 2005'

Our Rating:
TEN SECONDS OF CHAOS are a driving three piece rock band who picked up that well-travelled vehicle somewhere around Biffy Clyro/Vex Red time. This Millennium anyway. Which will make them Pretty Nu Punky Rawk vintage I guess. (check your glossary of terms for full details)

The bass drums guitar and voice (one of each) format had the stuffing fairly well pummelled out of it during the last quarter of the last century. But undaunted, TEN SECONDS OF CHAOS fling their substantial talents at the knackered old beast and … shockingly … get some sparks of life out of it. A bit of a rocket blast to be honest. And certainly enough to get through the three blazing cuts on this CD.

"Face the Problem" has a contemporary guitar noise intro, and a nicely Trisha kind of face the problem / no make it stop dialogue going. Vocals swap between wise old proper singing and screamed adolescent refusal. A nice touch. If I didn’t know better I would say there was a bit of emo in there somewhere.

"Apathy is Easy" is big and chugging, with a lovely soaring voice that really flies. The principal guitar motif (yeh, riff) is a cracker and even the lighter reflective moments have a commitment that neatly and knowingly contradict the title. Easy? Impossible might be a better word as far as TEN SECONDS OF CHAOS are concerned. It’s played with nothing short of heroic enthusiasm, and some Herculean mixing and mastering have gone into a self-produced beast of a sound.

"Happy Is What I should Be" starts as a proper song with a pretty good tune. Obviously the guitar bass drum thunder piles in pretty soon, and to good effect. The surprise is a burst of Robert Harvey-like quality singing that lifts the whole thing. And there is a reprise of the quieter part, with (this time round) its predictable and even more dramatic demolition for afters.

Matt Higgins sings and flails guitar. Paul Relton doubles up those meaty bass lines and Sam Leach beats the crap out of a good sounding drum kit while confessing to some computer embellishment in the process. Smart lads. Cracking EP.
