TERRI WALKER’s 2003 debut ‘Untitled’ received good notices with many critics buoyed by the fact that she was a homegrown soul/R’n’B talent rather than a US import. The album failed to catch the mainstream but her arrival was well noted: at last year’s MOBO Awards she was up for 4 gongs while the album was also short-listed for the Mercury prize.
For her follow up album ‘L-O-V-E’ she’s headed off to Denmark to work with producers/remixers Soulpower and Copehaniacs, no doubt giving her some extra cutting edge to slip more easily into the public consciousness. The album’s opening declaratory ‘This Is My Time’ is the follow up single to ‘Whoopsie Daisy’ and highlights the modern touches that her producers have brought, especially in the tight beats. Crucially their presence does nothing to detract from the old school soul and R‘n’B musical backdrop in which TERRI’s passionate and uplifting vocals sit so comfortably. Refreshingly this is also the sound of British Soul and there is nothing remotely US about the whole affair giving TERRI added kudos.

If TERRI can keep true to her purer take on soul and R’n’B then her individuality should be rewarded with the success her talent deserves.
