Review: 'KUBB'
'REMAIN'

-  Label: 'MERCURY (www.kubbmusic.co.uk)'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '22nd August 2005'

Our Rating:
KUBB grabbed the discerning by the scruff of their neck with their recent debut single "Somebody Else" and seriously wow-ed the W&H posse at an ensuing soiree at the bijou Dublin Castle in London shortly after.

Consequently, new single "Remain" comes in under that over-used industry term 'eagerly awaited', but thankfully shrugs off that pressure to sound every bit as vital and impressive as the debut. Opening with the je regrette rien of Harry Collier's lyrics ("Here's to the future, forget about the past"), it's more urgent and indie-ish in design than "Somebody Else", but every inch as gripping. Naturally, Collier's skyscraping, Jeff Buckley-esque (and he actually deserves that epithet) vocals are a major plus point, but really the whole band shine, with a special mention due to Adj's silvery, Will Sergeant-style guitar.

It's still early days, but at this juncture it's looking very good indeed for Kubb. They have apparently completed their debut album with Killing Joke man Youth retained in the producer's chair and have a whole bevy of beauties like this raring to go. I truly hope that's the case because we badly need someone with substance and soaring anthems who can go that extra mile and finally knock Coldplay off their perch.
