HAYLEY HUTCHINSON comes from York and is yet another female singer/songwriter. Via her guitarist father – who played with Bowie – she immersed herself in 60s and 70s acoustic rock, rounding out her musical education with her own discoveries of Wilco, Ryan Adams etc.
While its easy to lump HAYLEY together with the likes of K.T. Tunstall by the simple fact that she is a) female b) plays guitar and c) writes her own songs, on the evidence of ‘Here’s The Love’ she deserves as much spotlight and attention based on the merits of what she offers to the discerning listener.
The title track is a wonderfully breezy and uplifting strum-along that easily matches anything Ms. Tunstall has produced and more interestingly positions HAYLEY as a female counterpoint to acts like Turin Brakes. The 60s/70s country rock of The Byrds and Gram Parsons are more pronounced on ‘Minor Key’ but it’s still a timeless piece of well-crafted country-tinged acoustic pop in its own right. On the solo ‘Happy Endings’ her voice reminds me of Joni Mitchell in its crystal clarity and soul-affirming brightness: a sound that will easily warm even the hardest of hearts and raise the dampest of spirits.
