Review: 'DIVINA ICON'
'LITTLE DEVILS'

-  Album: 'Single No. 1'
-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '01.07.05'

Our Rating:
On first glance, at their glossy press photo, it would be easy to dismiss London three-piece DIVINA ICON, as a Marilym Manson/Cure hybrid that really shouldn't be taken that seriously. The goth/punk haircuts, the carefully applied eyeliner and lipstick, the vulgar displaying of the crucifix; it's all there, in abundance.

Still, never judge a book by it's cover, an' all that.

On first listen, to their glossy new three track single, it would be easy to dismiss London three-piece Divina Icon, as a Marilyn Manson/Cure hybrid that really shouldn't be taken that seriously. The goth/punk guitars, the carefully produced sound, the vulgar nasal whine of the vocal; it's all there, in abundance.

To be fair, lead track 'Little Devils' sounds nothing like The Cure, or Marilyn Manson for that matter. Unfortunately.

Subdued verses, followed by loud choruses, are the order of the day for Divina Icon. Sounding more like Suede on a bad day, 'Little Devils' is a contrived piece of goth/rock nonsense. And with a slight nod to Simon Le Bon on helium, vocalist Dale's performance is in severe danger of falling into parody. It's been done a million times before, and by better bands than this lot.

'Top Floors' fares little better. The guitar riff is right out of the Weezer 'Hashpipe' era, condeming the track to bargain basement of originality. Built around the events of 9/11 (I presume), at least the the ambigious nature of the lyrics show some sign of talent: “I'm over the city/ A pretty view it's so red, white and so blue/ America calls”.

Third track 'World Addict' is just plain shite. If this is punk, then I'm the fuckin' editor of 'Rolling Stone'.

Referring to themselves as “dandy punks”, the band's website also proudly claims; “...the band pride themselves on their electric and volatile shows that bring new meaning to the live experience leaving the competition standing.”

Aye, right.
