'SET TO GO'

-  Genre: 'Rock' -  Release Date: '24th October 2005'

Our Rating:
Poor old MY AWESOME COMPILATION: seemingly doomed forever by dint of geography. After all, if they'd hailed from an obscure college town on the Eastern US seaboard then they'd fit right in with their obvious peers such as Less Than Jake, All-American Rejects, Brand New etc. Yet, as it stands, they hail from Leicester - previously home of thorn-in-the-side indie weirdos such as Prolapse, Yeah Yeah Noh and Gaye Bykers On Acid - and end up the resoundingly square peg in the British rock hole. Whatever shape that may take these days.

Produced by one of the UK'S few like-minds, Larry Hibbett from Hundred Reasons, "Set To Go" is culled from the band's recent debut album "Actions" and is perfectly competent, standard issue stuff, with crankily melodic riffs and yearning vocals giving off that all-pervasive Eau De Emo and only the nicely wonky organ setting up a fight back of sorts. It's fine, but utterly unremarkable, which isn't half enough.

Still, they've hit upon one ingenious idea. On their forthcoming tour, they intend to get all their fans to bring their own 'awesome compilation' CDS/ cassettes with them which will be swapped at random on the door, thus ensuring everyone goes home with a new 'awesoe compilation' and might just get to hear cool new bands in the process. Ingenious. On John Peel Day (and I'm typing this on said day) that's the spirit and it surely earns MAC that well-deserved fifth star.
