Our Rating:
Newcastle outfit CALVOON'S desire to inject rave culture with a lethal dose of rock'n'roll is hardly new. Indeed, a couple of their producer Pat Collier's previous charges (Primal Scream, The Wonder Stuff) have had a good stab at aligning the dance and rock genres with varying degrees of success.

However, the band's second single "CominOnStrong2TheMaximum" is nonetheless likeably snotty of attitude, corrosively anthemic of chorus and rips it up in fine enough style for you to lob the analysis off the balcony and simply get down. It's spunky, bouncy and irreverent and, even in these complex times, that should be enough to say hallelujah to Saturday night. It seems to be so in this case.

Flipside "Feeling The Feeling" is a goodie as well.   It's similar in kinship in that the dancefloor again seems the ultimate target, but musically this one actually harks back to late '50s rockabilly/ rock'n'roll vigour with lots of well-juiced Chuck Berry-style guitar lobbed gleefully into Calvoon's everything-goes stew. And it does it without an iota of pretence, too.

So maybe enjoying Calvoon for what they are is the simple answer here. Besides, you can't really complain when your party is soundtracked by such day-glo, inhibition-jettisoning sounds, can you?
