Review: 'MAGNETOPHONE'
'AND MAY YOUR LAST WORDS BE A CHANCE...'

-  Label: '4AD (www.4ad.com)'
-  Genre: 'Pop' -  Release Date: 'October 2005'

Our Rating:
With ethereal vocals from The Fence Collective's HMS Ginafore new single from Magnétophone is a beautiful tune, evocative of hot, lazy summer days. Shimmering keyboard harmonies (played by King Creosote- also of Fence Collective fame) and echoing electronic drumbeats only help to re-enforce this image, making it a super cool song to lie down and relaaaax to.

B side 'Something I Can Understand' slowly builds up layer upon layer of noise, starting with a drum machine beat, and climaxing with three layers of vocals, fat synthesiser chords and an organ, and helps carry on the laid back feel of the A-side. These songs are different from the earlier offerings of the Midland based band and it would be interesting to see what their new album will be like.

But these are still two beautiful tracks that are well worth a listen
regardless of the bigger picture.
